Make Your Own Shaker Globes

We won't talk about how long ago (first week of Lent) we did this project and how long the pictures have been just sitting here waiting to be used (just as long).  I did let Aidan help with the photography for this project so some of the pictures are a little mis focused... we're learning :)

Materials

Baby oil (might need two depending on the size of your container)

Glitter

Hot glue gun & glue

Glass jar with a tight lid (we used a pint mason jar)

Small statue and accessories

For our shaker globe we used a piece from a nativity set and plastic fish tank ferns.

Arrange items and glue to the inside of the jar lid, making sure not to go over the seal.

Fill jar with oil.  Don't go all the way to the top or you will have a big oil mess when you go to add the figure (remember, it will displace liquid...physics and all that stuff).

Add glitter.  

You can also try other mosaic pieces like Aidan had in the above picture.

Insert dry lid and tighten as much as possible.  Glue around the edge of the jar, as much to prevent kids from opening as to hold liquid in... the lid should pretty much do that.

Shake well and enjoy!

Display next to your Stations of the Cross candles, like the ones we made last year 

(and have since put away with the coming of the Easter season)

Tips

You can use water instead of oil, but the glitter is more likely to get clumpy.

Be sure whatever statue & items you use are water safe.

Conversely, check your glue to make sure it is not water soluble.
